Neglect
I’ve opened this site up once in the last two weeks. It’s a shame really, I love writing in it - I’ve just been overwhelmingly busy. Apparently you guys have been as well. I had 80 comments waiting for me - 6 real ones and 74 spam. Some of the comments were from new people, too - I always enjoy responding to those but I’ve just been conspicuously absent instead. I think it’s a common phenomenon with the time of year. Personally, I’m transitioning back from summer (when my daylight hours are a dependable and steady regiment of work and my nights are free) to school (where my schedule is distributed over more hours of the day but less predictably). This happened last year as well - I began this blog on August 5, 2005, wrote for three days, and then didn’t write again until September 28. BAL documents this same occurrence with a guest post on his own blog. He begins by introducing Scott and realizing Scott’s rebuttal of his excuse of “nothing to write about” is right:
Evidently he is taking umbrage with my claim that I have nothing to write about. Upon reading his post, I must conclude that he is correct.
…
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Scott, and I’m guest posting for Good at Drinking, Bad at Life. Although I’m a two-time veteran of the Hater’s Happy Hour, I prefer my blog action from the sidelines and rarely contribute to the community. When I saw yesterday’s bitch-ass post, however, I knew I had to set the record straight.
“Or perhaps my life has just hit a dull spot lately. In truth, very little has happened to me over the last few weeks. Sure, I’ve visited New York , sprained my ankle, said goodbye to my roommate, and gotten re-involved with that girl with whom I had The Talk. But aside from all that, very little has happenedâ€
You see, having a blog is a lot like having sex without a condom in a committed relationship. When you’re single (or blogless) it looks so fun and exciting. “What a novelty,†you tell yourself. “I’d never take that for granted.†But you do. When the romantic glow wears off you quickly discover exactly how messy, personal, and in-your-face it can be.
A complex but appropriate metaphor. I’m hereby rededicating myself to writing after an unplanned two-week hiatus. I have not enjoyed the Internet as I am wont to do at all during this time. It has been spent doing work, coaching ice hockey, preparing for classes, reconnecting with friends, and other normally-frowned-upon activities. I now know it should have been spent reading comics, newspapers, blogs, and my own writing as it is the rest of the year. I needed something to snap me back into it, and I think Hurricane Ernesto was just the right cure. It was 93F and 95F on Monday and Tuesday and I contest the observed 81F and 76F on Wednesday and Thursday because the walks to class felt as hot and humid as ever. Waking up Friday morning to a cloudy sky, misty rain, and cool breeze was the most refreshing feeling in a while. In the difference of one day I was transported back to the weather of fall, harbinger of hockey, snow, my wonderful khaki fleeces (yes, plural), and my favorite time of the year - October through February. The weather combined with some excellent music, courtesy of Fatboy Slim’s The Greatest Hits - Why Try Harder? made today a very relaxing and useful day. I caught up with everything going on the world. I read the newspaper and recent highlights and caught up on my favorite blogs - all 497 posts since August 22.
I’ve done great things recently that haven’t made it up here yet. I’ve seen Snakes on a Plane (twice), spent a lot of time with great people, actually accomplished some minor achievements in the realm of “Things That Matter”, and generally spent my time pursuing admirable goals. All of these things will eventually make it onto the site, just be patient. You know that despite my current pace, I would never deprive you of my personal reaction to Snakes on a Plane.
